The Windermere Prep Varsity Softball team is having an incredible season. With a record of 8-3, the team has dominated their competition. They have produced massive wins over Seven Rivers Christian (15-0), Orangewood Christian (twice!), Cocoa Beach (13-1), and many more. This season has been a complete 180 for the team and coaches James Hamilton and Alexandria Southard, as the squad has made significant improvement from last season when they had a 4-12 record.
On offense, junior Vanessa Nawracaj has earned her spot on the leaderboard in batting average, on base percentage, slugging, and extra-base hits. Another source of offense for the varsity team has come from power hitter and freshman Cierra Walker, who leads the team in batting average, home runs (2), hits, RBIs, and slugging. Overall, the entire lineup has been on fire, with 7 out of the 14 players on the roster hitting above .300! 3 of those players are still in middle school and play for both varsity and JV, making the future a lot brighter for WPS softball.
The pitching rotation for the Lakers has stunned opposing offenses almost every game! Vanessa Nawracaj has been their ace with an outstanding 2.76 ERA (earned run average), 3 wins, 33 innings pitched, and 64 strikeouts. Junior Carsha Campbell has also pitched a majority of the innings with 34 strikeouts. Another pitcher who has stepped up is 6th grader Ella Goldberg, who has struck out 3 in 3 innings. In total, the softball pitching staff has only given up 39 runs in 11 games, keeping teams scoring an average of only 3.5 runs per game!
9 games lie ahead for the WPS Varsity Softball team, with tough matchups against Master’s Academy (away), Trinity Prep (away), Harvest Community HS at home, and Leesburg HS at home. All of these opponents will present challenges to the Lakers’ dominant pitching staff, clean defense, and powerful lineup as they finish off their spring season.
