During February, students Braelyn MacGregor-Schultz and Asmi Joshi created two posters for Black History Month featuring African American dancers. One was for Alvin Ailey, who played a part in starting the American modern dance movement, used dance to uplift those in his community, and created his own company, he has also received a Kennedy Center Award honoree and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. The other poster was about Katherine Dunham, a dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist known for creating a unique style of dance mixing African and Caribbean movements with modern dance. She taught her technique to students in the Dunham School of Dance and Theatre in NYC, started the Katherine Dunham Dance Company, and advocated for civil rights and social justice. These two students showcased two amazing and influential African American dancers.
