Only a year after Wicked: Part 1 released, the second installment in the series, Wicked: For Good released, on November 21st, picking up shortly after the first movie left off. Elphaba is now hiding, trying to expose the Wizard’s evil deeds against the animals of Oz and Glinda has recently been appointed as the “Good Witch,” and is soon to be married to Fiyero.
The movie follows both Elphaba and Glinda, as their paths further diverge, their once close bond becoming ever fragiler, after Elphaba left by herself to try and save the animals.
Globally, Wicked: For Good has made over $400 million and is expected to double that amount in due time. As of right now, it has Rotten Tomato averages of 93% for fan reviews and by the critics, 68%.
While most people have enjoyed the second movie, many state that the first film was more enjoyable, due to catchier songs and better pacing than the second. Critics state that there are too many quick scene changes and with little explanation between each one which then make the pace feel more rushed.
“Really, the biggest problem with Wicked: For Good is its atonal pacing—songs take ages to finish, while characters are constantly being tossed into scene after scene,” states Emma Stefansky from IGN.
Another point of weakness some have pointed out are the songs. While the first movie had songs such as Popular and Defying Gravity, the songs from the second movie are less memorable and “fun”, as the second movie takes a darker tone.
While the second movie may not be as good as the first, it’s still worth watching to see what happens to Elphaba and Glinda on their journeys in Oz. While one’s expectations shouldn’t be as high for the second movie, it still is an enjoyable watch to go see with family and friends.
