On April 23rd, the Create Like a Laker 5th grade showcase took place. This was a show that the sketching, 3D art, dance, theater, and choir students all had a part in creating.
This was the second show of the year with the Imagine Like a Laker show being in December. Throughout the 5th grade year, students choose two different fine arts classes to take. This group of students chose one class to take for the first semester with it being showcased at the former show and a second art class in the last semester of the year that was displayed at this program.
The show began with the choir program, Little Laker Voices, singing two songs for the audience. The song, Fly, was picked by Sarah Saft, one of the 5th graders there.
This is because she was the only student picked for Florida All State Choir out of all students at Windermere Prep. The accomplishments of Sarah Saft were announced during the program and were met with the applause of the audience.
Dispersed throughout the show was a slideshow presentation, with all the art done in the 3D art class and the sketching and cartooning class. Fifth graders would walk the audience through the different projects they completed during the second semester of the year.
For example, the sketching class picked random prompts out of a cup that they would then have to draw. One day, they had to sketch a dragon blowing bubbles instead of breathing fire. The 3D art class made small sculptures of their interests and made pottery. They also got to make 3D images of their names cut out of paper.
All of the students’ work was displayed at the entrance to the theater where parents could walk around viewing the physical art made. After the show ended, these students were able to bring their work home to display in their homes.
Following the physical art, the theater class showed a variety of sketches, one being that the students, as they prepared for the showcase, weren’t able to stop singing. The sketch ended with all the students chasing Frank DelGuercio off the stage as he played a ukulele, urging them to keep singing.
They performed again later with a game show in which the contestants were told a riddle and would have to come up with answers that fit the characters they played. An overconfident student walked on stage and got the answer wrong, another played an overthinker and put the audience to sleep while she tried to reason it out, a wannabe superhero “flew” into the room, and a grandmother couldn’t stop saying, “back in my day.”
The students in dance showed off their talents by dancing to songs including Dancing through Life from Wicked and Pure Imagination from Willy Wanka. They twirled, tapped, and jumped in rhythm to the music. During their performance, a slideshow played of the dance students, showing them as babies and as they are now.
The showcase ended with all the 5th grade students going on stage and dancing to Can’t Stop the Feeling, as they held up signs saying “Create Like a Laker.” With that, the last showcase of their 5th grade year ended. Next year, the students will enter 6th grade to continue to learn and improve in the fine arts. This won’t be the last seen of the rising 6th graders and their talents.
