Club Day, a unity and diversity celebration, took place in the Cypress Center of Arts on Aug. 25 and high schoolers from WPS were encouraged to be open-minded and chose their clubs according to their personal interests. This event is important not only because it is school-related, but also because it showcases different cultures and countries through clubs such as the HOLA Club and the Brazilian Club. It gives students an opportunity to explore and join a wide variety of clubs.
During the celebration, high school students engaged with clubs as both leaders and members. According to Gutemberg Leao, founder of the Brazilian Culture Society (BCS), “Joining clubs shows you’re open to learning and stepping out of your comfort zone, and it is exactly the kind of mindset that makes our school better.” This means that Club Day is not just a simple event, it is about building a community, learning from each other, and creating connections between students.
Additionally, some clubs emphasize the importance of other cultures, since WPS is an international school. As claimed by Curling, Forensic Science and Core teacher, “Cultural clubs are a great way to connect with people who share the same background as you, while also meeting new people and learning about different traditions.” Therefore, these clubs not only build a sense of belonging but also promote cross-cultural understanding within the diverse WPS community.
To sum up, clubs are a great way for students to connect with others who share similar backgrounds and life experiences, especially in terms of culture and common interests. Furthermore, they help everyone appreciate different cultures across the WPS community.
